Boxboro 2012!

I reserved suite 114 at Boxboro today (under my name), which if memory serves me right is the suite we have used in the past. Now that we have somewhere to stay, let the fun begin as we figure out what we’ll do to make this Boxboro as much fun as those in the past.

  1. I will be able to volunteer for a couple of hours at Boxboro. Preferably Saturday morning, but either day/time will work. I will not be staying over Friday or Saturday night.

  2. At the May meeting I had mentioned several things about Boxboro, including the need for volunteers. Many of the members present indicated a willingness to help during the convention, which is fantastic! Thanks to all who volunteered.

I had also asked for input on how we thought the convention committee could help publicize the WRTC in 2014, as well as what the committee could do for CTRI for publicity. These questions had been posed to me by Tom Walsh, K1TW, who is one of the convention’s organizers.

If anyone has any thoughts on these matters I’d appreciate some input. I’d hate to have to tell Tom that our club couldn’t come up with any ideas, especially since one of the topics is what we’d like to see the committee do for us. Surely there must be something.

I will be talking to Tom later this week and I’d like to have some ideas to present to him, without having to come up with them myself. Please give this some thought.

One thing I forgot to ask the volunteers is what kind of shift they’d like to work – I’m assuming everyone wants to work the ticket tables, and the need there is mostly from 8 am to 12 pm both days. The shifts are two hours but you can do more than one if you want. If anyone else has decided they’d like to volunteer please let me know.

  3. Hi, Pat.
I believe that I said I would be attending and volunteering for a bit. However, it is beginning to look doubtful that I will be able to attend this year. I’ll keep you posted… just wanted to give you a heads-up!

  4. Okay, thanks, Ken. I hope you’ll be able to get there at least one of the days.

  5. I got a little more specific information from Tom, K1TW. He is looking for two-person “teams” to sell tickets, primarily Saturday in the AM, but also in the PM, and Sunday AM. Shifts are for two hours and the plan is to provide volunteers with a lunch ticket as in years past. We had several volunteers so if you could let me know when you’d like to help out, that would be great. We don’t necessarily have to provide a “team” of two, but I imagine it would be nicer to work with another CTRI member if given the opportunity.

Also, he’s looking for a few Extra Class ops to be control operators at the W1A station, especially during, but not limited to, the overnight hours. These are also two-hour shifts.

I’ll be going if the wife is willin’ and the creeks don’t rise (or something like that). I’m shooting to go early Saturday morning and could stay over that night and into Sunday. Or is it better to go Friday AM? I could do either. When I last spoke with John W1NA, he was planning to go up early as well – but I don’t remember if it was Fri or Sat. I’m easy, I can work a couple 2 hr shifts at just about any time.

  7. Jim,

Some of us go up Friday afternoon to get things set up and just hang out. I prefer it to going up Saturday morning because I’m already there and can get right into things without the drive up.

I think in the past most of us have volunteered to sell tickets on Saturday morning, because it’s busy enough the time goes by very quickly, and then you have the rest of the day to enjoy the convention. I sent an email to the volunteers this morning regarding the shifts.

  8. How many members *definitely* plan on staying overnight in the suite that Matt, WE1H, reserved for us? How much it will cost per member will be determined by how many are staying there. Because there is a significant amount of money involved, we need hard commitments from our members on this. Please let me know as soon as possible so we can calculate the per-person cost. I will need to know if you’re staying one night or two.

    Thanks.

  9. Pat: I plan on attending Boxboro and am willing to help out as needed on Friday and Saturday. I do not plan on staying overnight, as I live about 15 minutes away !! Will know about timing better as the date gets closer.

  10. Tom and I talked a little more on Sunday night and he’s still looking for ticket-sellers, control ops for W1A (could be an easy gig if no one shows up to operate – you get the station to yourself!), and a couple of “gophers” to help the exhibitors (run messages, get coffee, etc.) None of these require more than a 2-hour commitment, and at this stage we have pretty much first dibs on time slots. That will change as we get closer to the convention.

The control op position requires that you hold an Amateur Extra class license, and that you’re willing to “elmer” the person who wishes to operate, including how to run an HF rig with all the bells and whistles, quite possibly even on *gasp* SSB.

Please let me know if you’re interested.

  11. Thanks, Norm. Yeah, I guess there would be no need for you to stay in the suite. How convenient!

If you’d like to sell tickets I’d recommend picking a time you prefer sooner rather than later. Right now all the 2-hour slots are open on Saturday after 1 pm and all day Sunday if you wish to work inside, and all time slots are available both days if you want to work outside.

My understanding is that Tom, K1TW has many slots available for control operators and “gophers”.
