Field Day 2013

Hello all,

As maybe most of you are aware, myself and Chip -n1mie- are members fo the Radio Amateur Society of Norwich (RASON) where Chip is also President.  We would like to formally invite CTRI to our Field Day festivities at Giddings Park on Route 207 in Franklin, CT.  Chip has placed us on the ARRL Field Day Locator page.  Last year we ran 6A and had a good time.

We are hoping to set up 6A again this year, but expect to be down two stations this year (20m cw and 80m ph).  CTRI has a wealth of great operators and I think we could make a great team together.  We would like help in all the areas, setup, operators, and breakdown.  If you can set up stations, that is great.  I will be at the field Friday night for security if you want to come early to either stay or drop something off.  Campers (dry camping) and tents are welcome.

Operating tents or screen houses, stations, generators, operating desks and chairs along with computers (we do network logging with N1MM Logger) are needed.

Giddings Field is a large field with lots of trees for wire and room for yagis.  More importantly there are bathrooms!

I have been tasked with setting up the kitchen this year.  I am working on a menu that should not leave anyone hungry!  We are providing breakfast, lunch, and dinner Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday.  I expect to have plenty of coffee and water available as well as munchies throughout the day and night.

The next RASON meeting is May 16 at 7:45pm at the Norwich City FD HQ, with the final RASON FD meeting on June 20 just before FD.  That meeting will have training on N1MM Logger.  We get extra points for a training session related to ham radio.

Please contact Chuck or Chip, or, reply to his thread with availabilty.

Best,

Chuck -ka1cqr-

  2. Can you feel the excitement in the air? IT’S FIELD DAY! That’s right folks, Field Day is just a month away.

At the last RASON meeting I proposed the following menu, and was given a budget.

Saturday lunch: hamburgers, hot dogs, assorted chips and drinks. I hope to have that going by 11:30am.

Saturday dinner: Beef tenderloin, chicken breasts, baked potatoes, and salads with drinks. As it happens I met Bruce and Betty Adams at breakfast the other morning, and once she stopped throwing things at me (my memory may be a little fuzzy there) we had a discussion about a pot luck addition to that. We would like families to bring things that you might bring to a picnic. If there is something special you would like me to grill, just bring it!
    •Potato Salad
    •Macaroni salad
    •Fruit salad
    •Leafy salad
•Desserts (speaking for myself, anything with peanut butter in it)

Sunday breakfast: Eggs, pancakes, sausage, bacon, plus probably make a donut run.

    Sunday lunch: Leftovers

I am not a big one on making soups. Can anyone provide a crock pot of some soup, chili, beans, or anything like that which could be plugged in and kept warm over a period of time?

I was thinking about a big pot of coffee but then got to thinking a regular 12 cup pot would be more appropriate so it doesn’t get old and burn. It doesn’t take long to make a new pot.

I will be picking Pepsi and Diet Coke, regular and decaffeinated, as well as bottled water. What kind do you want?

Chip and I and a few others visited the FD site on Thursday. The kitchen is in pretty rough shape.

It has a refrigerator, it was plugged in, but the electricity was shut off so we are not sure if it still works or not.

There is no water in the kitchen. The nearest water is about 100 feet away on a faucet outside the bathrooms.

There is a cooking grill that I am not inclined to use. I will be bringing a grill from home, and hopefully Chip will bring his.

The good part of the kitchen is its’ counter space. We will need to get a heavy duty roll of construction paper to put down, but that will keep food out of the weather.

I will be bringing my camper to so I have the ability to make hot water. It also has a decent sized refrigerator, but we will be relying heavily on coolers with ice for food storage.

I anticipate going to Giddings Field the weekend before Field Day to “field day” the site. We will need cleaning supplies, toilet cleaner, gloves, buckets, brushes, stuff like that. I want to plug in the fridge to see if that works, hopefully leave it running so I can pack it up Friday night.

One item on the hit list is the bathrooms. We need to get the water turned on and try to clean them. I would also like to put heavy contruction paper on the walls. The sheet rock has been damaged and wet, with mold evident. I would like to cover that up.

My plan is to get there Friday during the day, pack away food, lay out the kitchen, and other chores as needed. I will fend for myself for dinner Friday night and Saturday morning. The message here is I will be there overnight if you want to drop something off, it will be secure.

**********What I need from you, the membership*********

    1. Are you coming?

    2. What do you need to drink?

    3. Can you bring any of the salads for dinner?

    4. Can you bring anything in a crockpot to keep going throughout the day?

    5. If anyone has any allergies, please let me know.

    6. Can you help clean the weekend before?
