2014 CQ 160 Meter CW Contest Results

OK, all you Top Banders…

Please post your contest results here by adding a comment/reply to this posting.

The best my ATU does is make my NVIS 80 Meter Dipole match to about 3.00 : 1 but even with that I was able to work all the way across the bay and down the coast to W1XX this morning. So far, one(1) QSO here. 🙂

  1. Hi Ken et al: It’s the 1/2 way point in the contest and I’m running about 50 Qs ahead of last year. Our QSO was interesting! After a couple of “U?s” your killer signal was readable…wow PW…but your posting explains why. So thanks for the Q…only my third RI: also KS1J and W1OP. Additional CTRI’ers worked so far: W1CTN, K1DM…hmmm probably forgot someone. Anyway, it is not too late later today to make some noise. GL! — John, W1XX

  2. I fired up the amp for this one and sat down for a few hours Friday night. Conditions didn’t seem bad and the noise was low. Worked John and Rick.My 160 antenna was (is) one I put up just before the CQWW CW last November and I think I managed to get maybe 8 radials down. But I had a lot of fun in this contest and will probably put some additional work into 160 once the warm weather arrive.

Any suggestions for suburban lot sized receiving antenaa? I thought Pat had a BOG but I’m not sure.

    Anyway here are my results

    Totals Q’s – 327 Sections – 45 DX – 17 Points – 54, 622

  3. My logging program says I put in 1 hour. Using my low (abt 20 ft at center) 80 meter dipole I was not able to work too many in this contest, but I did manage to work W1XX early Sat morning with peanut whistle signal strength. Early Sunday morning, I managed to work KS, NC and GA for my longest legs. No actual DX. Not a big score, but since Jim was HP maybe I can win RI for LP. 🙂

    Total: QSOs = 27 State/Prov = 15 Countries = 0 Total Score = 1,035

  4. Other priorities this weekend but had fun getting on at the very end w/ QRP. Tnx to John W1XX for the RI mult. Struggled to be heard btwn 2100-2200Z (as inv-L may not be best for close-in NVIS work). Things ramped up quickly in final hour w/ Q’s as far as MI, KY, NC and even GA with contacts occuring almost every other minute.

Comments: I gotta be pretty happy with the score. My goal was to break 300K (done), top last year’s state/prov total (done by 4), break country total (tied at 42). Only state missed was MT…and even K3ZM missed it….missed the usual Canadian mults, but VO1 and VE4 both called in late. Friday night to EU was only so-so. EUs were fairly loud at the start of the contest at our sunset, but only the EU big guns could hear me. At their SR…things were only fair. Saturday night/Sunday AM at the EU SR, things were very good….with a cacophony of multitude signals calling at once….help us! Going “partial” got most of them with the EU crowd well behaved (surprise). A slew of 10 pointers made it into the log. SR yielded no VKs or ZLs or KLs, but got two KH6s. JAs? Fawgetaboutit! The only thing that could have improved the score was to keep the BIC. Took many breaks: 2 hours sleep each night….didn’t miss either men’s or women’s UConn game…and it’s tuff to stay at it when the rate really drops. Over 50/hr for the duration beat last year’s effort. Came back Sunday afternoon for the last hour of the contest….first station worked was QRPer W1WBB. TNX, Bill! SSB version comes up late in February. Hey…where was W1AN? 73! — John, W1XX

  6. Greetings CTRI’ers
For this year’s contest, I operated in the High-power assisted category. Since I was using assisted, it didn’t matter that all but my first contact were made using 100 watts. I put in 10.05 hours, which was not too respectable, but I got frustrated that so many European stations I could hear couldn’t hear me. All was search and pounce.
    I managed 25 five-pointers and 9 ten-pointers. Here’s my breakdown:

             QSO Points States/Provinces DX Countries

             238 623 46 13

    Claimed Score: 36,757
