  1. For whatever unusual reason, my heart was not in this contest this year. It is usually my favorite, but not this year. Maybe it is an age thing. I only put in about 8 hours with BIC. No clean sweep this year. Missed both NT entries and the NNY ARRL section. Did a bit of trolling on 40 and 80 to get the NNY, but no dice. Here are my results.

  2. First time in the SSCW form in 9 years. This one I usually skip so I can work on leaf pickup but the weather was bad and I still only have one wing. Since the beam was pointed West, the power line noise wasn’t a factor. I missed clean sweep by two. No QC (believe it or not) and NT. Worked K3IU, KI1G, W1XX and W1WBB. Was out there for about 16 hours.

Not my usual full 24-hour effort (I hear ya Ken). Was really bummed out with wind loss of 80 meter vertical. In the high winds Friday and Saturday morning, tried a temporary wire fix which failed…only to be stung by bees retrieving mis-guided arrows in the woods. Right on the right ear. Swelled up 50% bigger than the left. I thought I could fly. Missed VE8/VY1 which is always tough and Northern New York — a chip shot on 80 meters. Continue to learn nuances of N1MM logging thanks to the patience of Ken K3IU who is my N1MM crutch. Look forward to Saturday’s CTRI meeting here to re-raise the 80 meter vertical…with mucho TNX to CTRI!!!! 73! — John, W1XX (formerly known as Amigo #3…now known as Dumbo)

  4. With the terrible weekend WX around here decided I would participate a bit more than planned. But without computer-generated CW (not yet set up due to brand new computer) this was a serious challenge with the long SS exchange. Hung in running QRP, doing S&P and working many (100+ Q’s!) on wide open, quiet 10m band. The mults kept coming, with 63 SECs by late Sat eve quitting time, so I kept at it later on Sunday. More than doubled my QSO count and was surprised to have eventually found/worked 81 of 83 SECs. Heard and called both VE6 and VE8 late without luck. Last 5 SECs for me: KH6, KL7, SFL, NL, and lastly WV.

Worked only KS1J and KI1G de CTRI…Rick had biggest ser # I’d copied 6.5 hrs into ‘test! So it appears the RI mult was well represented by our gang once again in SSCW. 72/73…Bill W1WBB

    Comments:

Missed VE6 and NT. Tried to get attention of VE8EV when I heard him on 20m band in his S&P mode with 1h 15m left in contest…no luck with my 5 watts even after successfully finding him on multiple occasions. Called a weak VA6SM in vain who was CQ’n on 10m earlier in afternoon. Only two ever heard from those sections. Not having 15m band available due to radio issues did not help in hunt for those final 2 mults. But great 10m condx made up for it, exceeding 100 Q’s (in SS!).

All exchanges/info hand sent (!!) ‘old-school’ as not yet CW-interfaced with brand new computer. Apologies for the erratic fist and thanks for the
patience, especially pulling out my QRP sigs. Hence, almost exclusively
    S&P myself.

Severe winds/rain here all weekend allowed more radio time but created SWR havoc on my usually effective 40/80m doublet…so it was not used.

    Icom IC-706MKIIG @ 5w; Hexbeam up @ 32′ on 10/20m; OCF dipole @ 30′ on 40/80m.

I was really looking to put in a full effort, but had low energy due to busy week before. Only put in a few hours here and there. Near the end I really thought I could get the clean sweep, missing only MAR surprisingly.

Great job on QRP Bill W1WBB. No PC macro code on CW must have been a chore! Let me know if I can help with the new hardware/radio.
