NPOTA Activation in CT

Greetings all:

K1CYQ and I activated Roger Williams Monument, NM22 today. Other than four bus loads of middle schoolers from Killingly, CT dropping in unannounced for an hour at lunch time, we had no problems at all, if you don’t count the sirens, motorcycles, Acela train horn and other traffic. Headphones are useful. The two rangers on duty didn’t require any permits and were happy to see us.

From 12:30 to 2:45, we made 4 contacts on 40 and 49 on 20, all SSB. Tried CW on 20 with no replies. Band condx were fair to good. Radio was IC-7300 running 100 watts, battery powered to a
PAC-12 antenna. There were no ropes or wires in the trees, stakes in the ground or generators running. I learned that these are the things that the rangers aren’t fond of. We made contacts with
Washington, many southwestern states, many mid western and southern states and a few short skip nearby. For DX, we logged VE and CU3. We will positively return in a few weeks. At least a dozen
stations said that we had given them a new one, so Roger Williams Monument must still be somewhat needed, even now in the tenth month. Records state that there have only been seven activations with 529 contacts to this date. There’s room for lots more.

I have learned that the Providence EMA is planning to activate NM22 on November 12th. We will likely do another activation before that date.

Agree. I’d like to try NPOTA, but the WWDX is first.

CQWWDX multi operation @ W1AN the last weekend of this month. NPOTA can be another weekend. (my personal opinion) K1DM

Gents,

We have talked about doing another NPS Centennial activation on a weekend and at 8-Mile Nat’l Park in CT (not mutually inclusive).

Do we want to go ahead with another NPOTA effort or focus on CQWW SSB at W1AN or do both!?

Hi James,

I just returned from Yellowstone Park where my neighbor, Buddy K1CYQ and I activated that park for several days. We made over 500 QSOs.

We were thinking about activating Roger Williams Memorial National Park, possibly this week. Buddy has a PAC-12 antenna and KX-3 radio and can operate from his car very easily.

John, W1XX said that you have the head ranger’s name and phone number. Should I call to make arrangements beforehand?

Thanks, Bob W1YRC

Gentlemen,

To accommodate our weekend warriors, let’s try for any time that works for most this weekend or next. We had already talked about the weekend of the 22nd (the weekend before CQWWDX SSB).

Roger Williams is OK; but Dr. Mike will have to call the Assistant Superintendent of the Roger Williams Memorial National Park. Which is not a bad thing; she was really pleasant and sounded very reasonable. But she might need a form checked off.

8 mile river sounds equally doable. Probably a lot less hassle, eh.

All: 8 mile river = WR15…I missed spotting this one and it looks like a pretty good bet at 27/928 activations/QSOs…sounds like a lot but pretty much near the bottom of the list of activations. When? — John, W1XX

I will check Eight-mile river in the morning. It’s very near my QTH (and the QTH of W1DX/R. I will look specifically near the intersection of the river and Route 82. All we need is a wide spot in the road on the river bank! K1DM

Weekends anybody?

Check out other locations. MA, RI, CT too. Eight mile river in CT should be an easy one.
